Theme Music
Phillip, I’m calling you out. In a little interoffice frivolity this morning, we discussed how humorous it would be if a pastor had personal theme music played before he preached/taught. Since Phillip is a veritable consortium of musical knowledge extending across multiple genres and time periods, I figured I’d give him first shot at answering this question:
What would be your ministerial theme music?
Other pastors out there, feel free to answer in the comments below. Include a brief statement as to why you chose your particular song.

My early favorites would have to be: Isaac Hayes’ “Theme from ‘Shaft’” and Quincy Jones’ “The Streetbeater” (theme from ‘Sanford and Son’) and the opening minute or so from U2’s “Wire” from ‘The Unforgettable Fire’. I imagine some other goldmines might pop into my mind later on.
For maximum effect, I think you need a video screen with the pastor walking our of his study and down the halls of the church toward the sanctuary while the music is playing–kind of like President Clinton’s grandiose and time-consuming entrance prior to his speech at the 2000 Democratic National Convention.
Ok, I’ll play- I pastor Houston Lake PCA in Warner Robins, GA. I want the theme from SWAT played as I enter while I point and wink at random congregants.
This discussion begs for wav files.
I’ve actually given quite a bit of thought to this over the years. I think the opening groove from David Bowie’s “Fame” (vamp as needed) or another Quincy Jones number, “Killer Joe” (which Doc Severinsen often used as bumper music on the Tonight Show).
I think the theme song from “American’s Greatest Hero” would be great. Or the Rocky them song would be thrilling as well!
I’m not yet an ordained pastor, however, it is never too soon to begin thinking about things of such great import. I would have to go with “The Final Countdown” or the theme music from “Rocky.”
Ok, I’m going to have to go with my top four:
Back in Black, AC DC
Pride (In the Name of Love), U2
Kashmir, Led Zeppelin
Voodoo Child Slight Return, Hendrix
Danger Zone, Kenny Loggins, from Top Gun
